Composer/Conductor Henry Dorn, a native of Little Rock, AR, has had compositions performed by the Argento Ensemble, the Sanctuary Jazz Orchestra, as well as at performances of the Dallas Wind Symphony and ensembles at the University of Memphis, the University of Oklahoma, and at Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. As a trombonist, Dorn has performed with Slide Hampton, Chris Vadala, Luis Bonilla, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, the Memphis Jazz Orchestra, the Sanctuary Jazz Orchestra, as well as alongside members of the Memphis, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Jackson Symphony Orchestras. Dorn was assistant director of the Memphis Area Youth Wind Ensemble from 2006 until 2009, and from 2009 until 2010 was director of Nu Chamber Collective, and ensemble dedicated to performing new music.
Dorn completed a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Memphis, a Master of Music in Wind Conducting and Composition at The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, and is currently completing doctoral studies in wind conducting and composition at Michigan State University. He has studied composition with David Biedenbender, Oscar Bettison and Kamran Ince and conducting with Kevin Sedatole, Harlan D. Parker and Kraig Alan Williams, having also studied jazz composition with Jack Cooper, trombone with John Mueller, and has been mentored by Anthony Plog. In March 2010, He received the ASCAP Foundation’s Morton Gould Young Composer Award. Dorn holds professional affiliations with Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, the College Band Directors National Association, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and with ASCAP.
