It Is What It Is
2021
For String Quartet
Duration: 8 minutes
This last year has been a whirlwind of change. We are slowly emerging from the shadow of a pandemic the likes of which the world has not seen in over 100 years. Having to adapt to changes like social distancing and masks are a reflection of our new norms. It has often been frustrating (to put it mildly). As a result, I now embrace more accepting views of others and the world around me. The pandemic has been a lesson in letting go of things beyond my control.
I find that “It is what it is” has become a favorite aphorism of mine. It embodies the idea of accepting what is and finding ways to live with it (whether we like it or not). In finding acceptance, I also find that I (like others) have had to find new and inventive ways to share with others and continue to embrace our combined human experiences. I think the pandemic managed to bring the best out of us. As for all of the unwelcome change – it is what it is. That is what this piece is about. Getting beyond the discomfort of unwelcomed change, working through the initial hesitance, and find your own personal groove.
It Is What It Is was premiered by Aizuri Quartet as a part of The Next Festival of Emerging Artist on July 1, 2021.
