Vertical Space

For Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet (or Alto Saxophone), Violin, Bass, Piano, and Percussion
Duration: 10 min

Traffic driving in and around Baltimore, MD can be frustrating to deal with, especially during high commute times of day. As you sit in your car in the parking lot that the expressways have become, it is a great time to meditate on life and why you didn’t get gas before leaving home. It is also a great time to get lost in your music listening pleasures. Vertical Space was inspired in part by these circumstances and the desire to get away from it all. The highly rhythmic beginning and closing segments highlight the increasing complexity of traffic, intertwined with the angry, road rage shouts of frustration that come with it. The middle fugatto is my idea of an oasis away from the traffic.

I am also in the process of creating a version of this for wind ensemble.
